1. Capacity building
The development of sustainable skills, organizational structures, resources and commitment to improvement in a diverse range of sectors, to prolong and multiply overall organizational growth and gains.

Change makers
Individuals who envision and actively, purposefully create change.

Giving Circle
A pooled financial fund that makes grants and is managed by the funds donors. Giving circles pool time, talent and resources between people who share a common interest in a social cause or issue, and allow for a wide range in charitable styles, philosophies and politics, structure, size, and focus through a very hands-on approach. Giving circles are also referred to as donor circles.

The creation of something new. Innovation is often confused with entrepreneurship.

Philanthropist
A person who loves humanity, is committed deeply to making society a better place, who believes that each individual, each dollar and each action makes a difference.

Philanthropy
Philanthropy can be broadly defined as the concept of voluntary giving by an individual or group to promote the common good. Philanthropy addresses the contribution of an individual or group to other organizations/individuals that in turn work to improve the quality of life for all citizens or residents.

Social change
Social change is characterized by:

  • Change in the nature, the social institutions, the social behavior or the social relations of a society, community of people, or other social structures.
  • Any event or action that affects a group of individuals that have shared values or characteristics.
  • Acts of advocacy for the cause of changing society in a normative way (subjective).

Social entrepreneurs
Social entrepreneurs are visionary individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. Ambitious and persistent, they tackle major social issues by changing systems, spreading solutions, and persuading entire societies to take new leaps to enact sustainable social change.

Strategic giving
Engaging in philanthropy in a strategic manner to make a major philanthropic impact through making better choices surrounding how much one spends, invests and gives back to society.

Venture philanthropy
Venture philanthropy takes concepts and techniques from Venture Capital finance and high technology business management and applies them to achieving philanthropic goals.

Venture philanthropy is characterized by:

  • Willingness to experiment and try new approaches
  • Focus on measurable results: donors and grantees assess progress based on mutually determined benchmarks
  • Giving financial, intellectual, and human capital
  • Funding on a multi-year basis
  • Focus on capacity building, instead of programs or general operating expenses
  • High involvement by donors with their grantees.
